American Pit Bull Terrier history

Among the big clubs breeds, only the United Kennek Club (the second great American club, with the ACK the first to be created) recognizes this breed. No escaping the rule, in Portugal the APBT is not recognized by the Portuguese Kennel Club. In the United States, many of these dogs have a double registration: registered in UKC as American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier as ACK.

It thus becomes difficult to speak in American Pit Bull Terrier breed, although the UKC has already set a standard in 2004, but that is only recognized within the club.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is associated with the stigma of violent attacks, being banned from several countries such as Canada and Sweden. One of his close relatives, the American Staffordshire Terrier, is part of the list of potentially dangerous dogs in several countries, including Portugal.

Having result of crosses between the various races loosely termed pits, the American Pit Bull Terrier, resembles the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, being taller and heavier.

It was initially created to get into dog fights, but nowadays also plays the role of pet. A ban on dog fights did not take these animals rings. Even undertaken covertly, struggles exist, and this race is a major elected to the fighting.
